I tend to agree with Piper that the purpose of marriage is VERY symbolic (http://christiantheory.com/2011/11/bible-saga-a-birds-eye-view/). Were the concepts of commitment and covenant not applicable then the entire setup could only serve a secular purpose. This simply can not be the case given the large amount of OT statutes on the matter.

Several married women in their fifties told me it was the best book on marriage they had read. These kind of women have read a lot of books on marriage. When they say that kind of stuff, I listen! :-)

Elizabeth, I think Keller does a good job of identifying marriage as a form of “common grace.” It is God’s good gift to the world in the way it benefits society.

But for unbelievers today, I think it’s kind of wide open. I was reading a wedding blog where that question was posed and the answers were extremely diverse. Keller (I think rightly) points out that much of our view of marriage as a society today is that it’s a means of self-fulfillment. Not sure if that helps, but I think it’s just not a cut-and-dry issue for anyone. No one really seems to be able to give it a definitive purpose because it’s open to each couple’s interpretation.

Thanks, I suppose I’m getting at the meaning of marriage when God is not really in the equation so much – what is the purpose(s) of marriage that will cut it with the world?

Lee and Leslie Strobel’s “Surviving a Spiritual Mismatch in Marriage” could be of help to those who are married to unbelievers. I have read it and found it very practical and helpful

I’ve only dipped into that book – I didn’t have time to read everything :) – but I liked what I saw (I’m a great paul tripp fan). Probably it would fit into the “inward” since it’s aiming to strengthen the marriage relationship?? But I’d have to read it to be sure.
